HONDURAS QUEERINGHOUSE
OSCAR'S COUP NOTES
Just a little housekeeping: the original AAA Resolution Info I had placed above the "About Me" for a while can now be seen here. The results of the membership ratification vote should be available in about a week. Regardless of the outcome (and I am optimistic), I was very glad to see the amount of debate it provoked, both in the United States and Honduras. For me, the purpose of submitting the resolution was threefold: to do something, small though it may be, to affect the abysmal mainstream reporting on Honduras and put the Resistance in the news; to challenge my fellow and sister anthropologists to honor Boas's legacy by condemning atrocities being carried out against the people we study, and reject the lazy academician tendency to be either actively or passively complicit in said atrocities; and to act in real international solidarity with the Resistance movement. I am happy that we have achieved that, and although the AAA's democratic process is slow (as per our bylaws) I have been deeply impressed by the organization's even-handedness and dedication to that democratic process. I also can't thank enough all the wonderful young anthropologists and awesome Philly activists who spent many cold hours volunteering to let people know about the vote at the meetings last December, and without whom we never would have gotten this far. Gracias, compas.
Last week's events, which I'm so grateful to have been a part of, are no longer in upcoming:
