"These elections are not of the people," said Carlos Humberto Reyes yesterday morning, paraphrasing the songwriter Mario de Mezapa. "They are for the boss," he concluded, and his words elicited a standing ovation in the weekly assembly of the Resistance that just confirmed the withdrawal of the independent candidate from the upcoming November 29th elections.

Ever since we got to know him four months ago, in the middle of the marches against the coup d'etat, when the Supreme Electoral Tribunal--for the first time in the political history of the country--had permitted the independent presidential candidacy of a popular leader, he conditioned his candidacy upon the return of constitutional order with Manuel Zelaya as president.

"We are prepared to participate in the elections," Reyes himself said earlier when asked about his political campaign, "but our priority must be the return of constitutional order."

It took a lot of work to put together an effective independent candidacy. It was necessary, among many other things, to collect nearly 70,000 signatures throughout the country in less than three weeks. But knowing that the two-party system has profoundly affected the national political system, and with the three smaller parties rendered ineffective as a result of internal struggles, it was believed that the candidacy of the union leader would open a path toward a new type of citizen participation. Of course, this is what was thought before the coup d'etat.

When Carlos Reyes and his close colleagues made their decision known to the assembly, he made clear that conditions for transparent elections did not exist, and that to the contrary they would legitimate the fraud of the oligarchy and of the coup. "95% of our electoral base throughout the country demands we withdraw from the elections," said Reyes, "and since we are not beholden to the interest of any strongman or the dictates of any party, we can confirm our decision to not participate in the dictatorship's election, following the demands of the people in resistance."

The right approaches the withdrawal of Reyes' candidacy with derision. "They wouldn't have been able to get even 20,000 votes," said a reporter in one of the coup media outlets. For them, the resistance has always been a small group, and nothing has happened in the country that merits a change in the form of government.

But what is clear is that the withdrawal of Reyes' candidacy adds another element to the crisis we are living with. The Democratic Unification [UD] Party, the only party of the left that despite serious internal fissure and accusations of corruption against some of its leaders, has managed to gain sympathy among the resistance, especially for its congresspeople who have shared the fate of the people in the streets. Now the find themselves with a complicated dilemma. On the one hand they face the electoral law that punishes them for not participating in the elections with the dissolution of the party. Meanwhile, on the other hand, are the people, who view the candidates who form part of the farce with deep mistrust.

UD will have to decide now whether it should disappear legally and resign itself to being a dwarf party, or watch its popular backing disappear and NOT grow as part of the political movement that is sowing the seeds of the future. Any candidate that carries out a campaign under the current conditions will be considered my many to be an opportunist, closer to the coup regime than the nation in resistance.

And as proof we can see the state of the candidacy of Doris Gutierrez, preciously the most popular candidate of the party and now a mere aesthetic element on the ballot. Whatever decision they make as a party will be a difficult one, but they should remember that legality does not exist in a de facto regime, while the support of the people, once lost, cannot be recovered.

The media report a violent incident last weekend at a rally in San Lorenzo, Valle, when the president of the National Congress, congressman Saavedra, carried out a political rally seeking re-election. The outcome was not entirely clear to me, but word is there was at least one death and numerous injured among the protesters.

Meanwhile, the repressive forces continue using paid assassins to sow terror among the people. The statement made by a member of the resistance this morning describing how five heavily armed men entered his house and attacked him and his family, beating and threatening him, only confirms the urgency of developing strategies of self-defense on all levels, against the regime.

“Estas elecciones no son del pueblo, -dijo Carlos Humberto Reyes ayer por la mañana parafraseando al Canta autor Mario de Mezapa- también son del patrón”. Concluyó y sus palabras levantaron una ovación entre los asistentes a la asamblea semanal de la Resistencia que acababa de confirmar el retiro del candidato independiente de las próximas elecciones del 29 de noviembre.

Desde que se conoció hace cuatro meses, en medio de las marchas en contra del golpe de Estado, que el Tribunal Supremo Electoral, por primera vez en la historia política del país, había aceptado la inscripción del líder popular para la candidatura independiente a la presidencia de la república, se condicionó dicha candidatura al retorno del orden constitucional con Manuel Zelaya a la Presidencia.

“Estamos preparados para participar en las elecciones, -dijo en su momento el propio Reyes cuando le preguntaron sobre su campaña política-, pero nuestra prioridad debe ser el retorno al orden constitucional”.

Mucho trabajo llevó hacer efectiva la candidatura independiente. Fue necesario, entre muchas cosas, recolectar cerca de 70,000 firmas por todo el país en menos de 3 semanas. Pero sabiendo que el profundo bipartidismo ha afectado profundamente el sistema político nacional, y con los tres partidos minoritarios sumamente desgastados producto de las luchas intestinas, se confió que la candidatura del líder sindical abriría el camino hacia un nuevo tipo de participación en la ciudadanía. Claro, todo eso se pensó antes del Golpe de Estado.

Cuando Carlos Reyes y sus compañeros de fórmula dieron a conocer la decisión tomada en asamblea, se dejó claro que no existen condiciones para unas elecciones transparentes y por el contrario se legitimaría el fraude de la oligarquía y el golpismo. “El 95% de nuestras bases por todo el país exige nuestra renuncia a las elecciones, -dijo Reyes- y como no nos debemos a los intereses de ningún caudillo o los lineamientos de ningún partido, podemos confirmar la decisión de no participar en las elecciones de la dictadura según lo manda el pueblo en resistencia”.

La derecha ve con burla la renuncia de la candidatura de Reyes. “No iban a ser capaces de recoger ni 20,000 votos”, dijo un periodista en uno de los medios golpistas. Para ellos, la resistencia ha sido siempre un pequeño grupo y en el país nada ha pasado que merezca un cambio en la forma de gobierno.

Pero lo cierto es que la renuncia de la candidatura pone un elemento más a la crisis que vivimos. El partido Unificación Democrática, único partido de izquierda que pese a la seria fractura interna y las denuncias de corrupción de algunos de sus líderes, ha logrado acumular simpatía entre la resistencia, especialmente para sus diputados que han vivido la suerte del pueblo en las calles. Ahora se encuentra en un dilema difícil de resolver. Por un lado se enfrentan a la amenaza de la ley electoral que castiga con la desaparición al partido político que se niegue a participar en las elecciones. Mientras, por el otro lado, el pueblo que ve con desconfianza a los candidatos que formen parte de la farsa.

UD tendrá que decidir ahora entre desaparecer dentro de la legalidad y resignarse a seguir siendo un partido enano, o ver desaparecer su respaldo popular y NO crecer como parte del movimiento político que se gesta para el futuro. El candidato que haga campaña en las condiciones actuales va a ser considerado por muchos como un oportunista, más cerca del golpismo que del pueblo en desobediencia.

Y para prueba podemos ver en donde ha quedado la candidatura de Doris Gutierres, antes la candidata más popular del partido ahora un elemento estético de las papeletas. Cualquier decisión que tomen como partido será difícil, pero deben recordar que la legalidad no existe en un régimen de facto; mientras el apoyo del pueblo, una vez perdido, no es posible recuperarlo.

Las noticias reportan un incidente violento el fin de semana en una concentración en San Lorenzo, Valle, cuando el presidente del Congreso Nacional, el diputado Saavedra realizaba una concentración política en busca de su reelección. El saldo, aun no me es claro, pero se habla de un muerto y varios heridos entre los manifestantes.

Mientras, la represión continua usando la forma del sicariato para sembrar el terror entre el pueblo. La denuncia que hizo un miembro de la resistencia esta mañana contando como cinco hombres fuertemente armados entraron a su casa y lo sometieron junto a su familia, golpeándolo y amenazándolo, no hace sino confirmarnos la urgencia de desarrollar estrategias de auto defensa a todo nivel, en contra el régimen.
