As had been announced last Sunday in the assembly of the Popular Front against the coup, Juan Barahona withdrew from the dialog table that was established last week at the Clarion Hotel. The reasons are clear. Barahona was the pebble in the shoe of the negotiations since letting it be known that he would not sign the act giving up the struggle for a constitutional assembly, because the resistance movement itself is not willing to give up that struggle, and he (Barahona) cannot decide in the name of the Front.

Barahona’s attitude is correct, and leaves the regime no doubt that with or without Mel, the constitutional assembly is a powerful project that seeks the re-founding of Honduras, and even if President Zelaya has made clear that he will renounce the project of the “fourth ballot box” [a plebiscite to vote on whether or not to call a constitutional assembly that would revise the constitution on a number of issues], it is now evident that he has neither the capacity to overpower the resistance movement’s commitment to a new constitution, nor is he in the mood to do so.

Currently the dialog is at a deadlock: the restitution of Zelaya to the presidency. And once again, repeating the absurd script about respect for institutions that we have heard so many times over these 4 months, they [the de facto regime] allege that they need to consult with the National Congress, the Supreme Court, the General Attorney’s Office, the Armed Forces, the churches, the business sector, and the whole gamut of institutions that make the coup possible, because the delegates installed by the regime have the power to agree on absolutely nothing regarding that issue.

The discussion at the Clarion Hotel will conclude tomorrow, just in time for the deadline given by Zelaya (which is itself an echo of the international community’s ultimatum) – the 15th of October. The dis-government toys with alternatives to returning him to the presidency; they speak of the return of Mel to the presidency after the 30th of November, of involving a third party, and they have mentioned the name of Edmundo Orellana Mercado, Zelaya’s ex-Minister of Security, ex-General Attorney, currently a congressman. He was honored as a hero by the golpistas just days before June 28th after he quit Zelaya’s cabinet because of the crisis generated by the “fourth ballot box” but since then they ignored him because of his clear position against the dictatorship.

At any rate if I have to describe the political climate in Honduras, I can assure you that it seems more like the eye of the hurricane than the end of the storm.

There is a big discussion around the decision by organized teachers to extend the school year into December after the government announced the close of the school year as of next week. Some think that the teachers fell into a trap, because they first said that they would not give classes without the restoration of Zelaya to the presidency, and now they say that they will not leave the classroom. According to this point of view, the dictatorship is using reverse psychology when it calls for no more classes in order to get teachers back into the classroom. For some others, the teacher’s position is correct since they do not owe obedience to a usurping regime as per the constitution’s article #3. What is certain is that it confuses the dis-government which shows itself incapable of controlling the teachers’ union and it puts the government in a tricky situation since they would now need to militarize the schools of Honduras in order to impede Honduran children from attending class.

Repression is now directed against the communicators. Arrest warrants have been issued for the journalists from Radio Globo, in which they are accused of sedition. Threats and intimidation by paramilitary agents against international correspondents from the alternative media are news in their own circles. This new target for repression includes digital media, Facebook and other virtual communities and these are now subject to detailed scrutiny in search of possible sedition.

But the resistance won’t give up. In the interior of the country the strikes, occupations, marches and street protests in defiance of the state of siege continue, thanks to the fact that the regime has all of its police and armed forces in the capital city and is no longer capable of controlling the national territory.

Como se había anunciado el pasado domingo en la asamblea del Frente Popular en contra del golpe de Estado, Juan Barahona salió de la mesa del diálogo instaurado desde la semana pasada en el Hotel Clarión. Las razones son claras, Barahona era la piedra en el zapato de las negociaciones desde que dejó claro que no podía firmar el acta renunciando a la lucha por la constituyente, porque la resistencia no piensa renunciar a ella y él, (Barahona) no puede decidir en nombre del frente.

La actitud de Barahona es acertada, deja claro al régimen que con Mel o sin Mel, la constituyente viene como un poderoso proyecto que busca la refundación de Honduras, y si bien el presidente Zelaya ha manifestado que renunciará al proyecto de la cuarta urna, ha quedado constancia que no tiene la capacidad de doblegar la voluntad de la resistencia para luchar por una nueva constitución, ni el ánimo de hacerlo.

Actualmente el diálogo permanece en su punto muerto, la restitución de Zelaya en la presidencia. Y nuevamente, repitiendo el absurdo guión de la institucionalidad que hemos visto tantas veces en estos cuatro meses, alegan que necesitan consultar con el Congreso Nacional, la Corte Suprema de Justicia, la Fiscalía, las Fuerzas Armadas, La iglesias, la Empresa privada y toda la gama de instituciones constructoras del golpismo, porque los delegados instalados por el régimen tienen todo el poder para acordar nada en lo relevante a ese punto.

Mañana se planea concluir con la discusión en el Clarion, a tiempo para el plazo dado por Zelaya, (que es además eco de la comunidad internacional) que concluye el próximo 15 de octubre. El desgovierno tantea opciones alternas a la restitución, hablan del retorno de Mel en la presidencia después del 30 de Noviembre, de una tercería en donde se manejan el nombre de Edmundo Orellana Mercado, ex ministro de Seguridad de Zelaya, Ex Fiscal General y actual congresista laureado como héroe por parte de los golpistas días antes del 28 de Junio luego que este renunció al gabinete de Zelaya en torno de la crisis generada por la cuarta urna y a quien ahora ignoran por su posición clara en contra de la dictadura.

En todo caso y si tengo que describir el clima político de Honduras, puedo asegurar que se parece más al ojo del huracán que al final de la tormenta.

Hay gran discusión en torno a la decisión del magisterio de permanecer en clases hasta diciembre luego que el gobierno anunciará la cancelación del año escolar a partir de la próxima semana. Para unos los maestros cayeron en una trampa, porque primero alegaban que no darían clases sin la restitución y ahora alegan que no dejarán las escuelas. Según este punto, la dictadura aplica psicología inversa al afirmar que no quiere clases para que los maestros asistan a las aulas. Para otros, es la posición acertada del magisterio pues no deben obediencia a un régimen usurpador según lo dicta la constitución en su artículo 3. Lo cierto es que confunde al desgobierno que se muestra incapaz de controlar al gremio magisterial y lo coloca en una posición difícil dado que ahora necesitarán militarizar las escuelas hondureñas para impedir que los niños de Honduras reciban clases.

La represión ahora se dirige en contra de los comunicadores, órdenes de captura para los periodistas de radio Globo acusándolos de sedición, amenazas e intimidaciones por parte de agentes paramilitares a los corresponsales internacionales de medios alternativos son nota en sus propios rotativos. Dentro del nuevo blanco de la la represión no se escapan los medios digitales, facebook y demás comunidades virtuales son ahora blanco de mili métricos escrutinios en busca de posibles sediciosos.

Pero la resistencia no se rinde, desde el interior del país continúan las tomas, los paros, las marchas y protestas callejeras contraviniendo el estado de sitio gracias a que el régimen tiene toda su fuerza policial y armada en la ciudad capital y ya no es capaz de controlar el territorio nacional.
