Today in Honduras we celebrate the Day of the Teacher, and this time, their party was in the streets. We have to pay our respects to the men and women who teach, and who have heroically resisted this usurping government which continues to use all its repressive arsenal to bust their union. Assassinations and beatings, persecution and threats, rigged judicial processes, prison and accusations in the media, takeovers of schools by people claiming to be parents of schoolchildren, insults and campaigns to discredit them are only a few of the resources that the dictatorship has used--to no effect. The teachers are still on their feet, and today they celebrate their day. Oozing hatred today on national television, "teachers, damn teachers," said Eduardo Facussé, a well-known businessman who has never in his life stepped foot in a public elementary or high school to see the reality of the educational system of the country, but who recognizes in the teacher's union an obstacle for the achievement of his class objectives. His hatred, in this case, should be taken as a monumental CONGRATULATIONS TEACHERS ON YOUR DAY because that level of contempt only confirms that we are winning.

Next year will be a difficult one for the teachers' union. It will be time for contract renegotiation and it is clear that the political class considers this a troublesome burden of which it would prefer to be relieved. Certainly if the coup succeeds, the next president will seek to cut off many of the rights obtained in the streets. The resistance of the teachers against the coup is, hence, necessary to ensure the future of the union.

Last night the presidential candidates returned from their meeting with Oscar Arias in San José, Costa Rica, and as we already knew would be the case, the, come with nothing but empty words to fill the space in the national newspapers without saying anything. "We are in agreement" -says the communique published by La Tribuna- "that, if a concerted effort were made, the San José Accords would facilitate reconciliation for the Honduran people, with effective monitoring by the international community, so that all the acts that provoked the crisis would not be repeated, thus ensuring complete respect for the constitution and the laws." They make no mention of the return of Manuel Zelaya to power as a condition of this "reconciliation" and to the contrary, it appears that far from condemning the coup d'etat of June 28th, they speak of a "preventive" monitoring of future attempts to change the constitution, blaming the coup d'etat entirely on the Zelaya administration and washing the hands of Micheletti and his mafia.

And it's that they see in the November elections their last hope to emerge victorious from the crisis and plan to ride it out, at any cost, so that the next president will be the one to achieve the "reconciliation of the Honduran people." "The next president is among us," the same communique says further on, at the same time that Roberto Micheletti accuses Oscar Arias of being a puppet in the service of the nations that wish to see the restitution of President Zelaya (in this case all the nations of the earth).

The Supreme Electoral Tribunal has announced they will join forces with a convention of the Evangelical Church, represented in this case by the pastor Evelio Reyes, in which they will present the "strategy" they plan to use to ensure that the November elections have the highest turnout in history. "Chain voting," as they are calling it, consists of convincing one person to vote, and that person in turn will convince ten more and each one of those ten will respectively extend the chain, as pastor Reyes puts it: "indefinitely" filling the polling stations with dyed-in-the-wool democrats. With this creative pyramid strategy, accompanied by the offer of Fito Facussé of the discount on burger and french fry combos, they hoppe to teach the world a lesson, demonstrating that the Honduran people have matured since June 28 and are ready to go ahead with their own national project hand in hand with the oligarchy.

It is impressive to recognize the impertinence with which Roberto Micheletti speaks. It gives the impression that he has come to believe his own lies when he states that "our people have not cut off the dialogue with San José," "we do not need anyone's help to show that we want to live in peace and democracy" and "only a foreign invasion can remove me from power"...It gives the impression that he believes them, that he has managed to blind himself to the world, appropriating a "truth" that, as the days go by, appears more and more twisted. "There is no way to go back now," the poor little man proclaims, "unless the Honduran people tell me, at a certain point, Roberto, we have to give up." Mr. Micheletti, we have been telling you that for 82 days.

Elvin Santos continues his victim strategy that served him so well in the primaries last year. This time he shouts to the four winds that he fears for his life, since according to him Manuel Zelaya has issued death threats against him and is sending non-Liberals to boycott his campaign, threatening him and other candidates for elected office that out of pure coincidence have firmly backed the coup d'etat. But the worst, according to Santos, is that these "bad Hondurans who call for people to not participate in the elections" enjoy international protection and impunity that threatens national peace and democracy, bringing us to the brink of war. "We must put a stop to this," says Elvin Santos, "we have to identify who are those who are doing all this damage and tell them enough is enough."

And finally, an example of the Orwellian doublespeak used by the national media. While the rest of the countries of the region seriously evaluate the possible ravages of the economic crisis, accompanied by the drought brought on by the El Niño phenomenon, which together could bring dire famine and a state of calamity among the poorest of the poor, Honduras announced today in the national newspapers that it has the best grain reserves in the region and is prepared to sell food supplies to its sister Central American nations. The authorities have guaranteed a solid reserve, says the newspaper article, and therefore Honduras will not be hit by the famine.

Assuming this article is true, it must be recognized that the grain reserves is from harvests of previous years, which according to the experts have been good ones. We have no guarantee that it will remain at that level in the coming year, because the lack of financial aid for agriculture after June, accompanied by the problems confronting the agricultural sector, could bring a situation much worse than what they imagine. But of course, this will all take place under the next government.

Hoy se celebra en Honduras el día del Maestro, en esta ocasión, las calles fueron su fiesta. Hay que rendir un merecido homenaje a los educadores y educadoras que han sabido resistir heroicamente frente a este gobierno usurpador que sigue haciendo uso de todo su arsenal represivo para quebrar al gremio. Asesinatos y golpizas, persecución y amenazas, procesos judiciales amañados, cárcel y acusaciones mediáticas, toma de colegios por supuestos padres de familia, insultos y campañas de desprestigio son solo algunos de los recursos que ha hecho uso -inutilmente- la dictadura. Los maestros siguen de pie, y hoy celebran su día. “Maestros, malditos maestros” dijo hoy con odio en televisión nacional Eduardo Facussé, conocido empresario quien jamás en su vida ha pisado los pasillos de una escuela o colegio público para conocer la realidad del sistema educativo del país, pero que sabe reconocer en el gremio magisterial un obstáculo para culminar sus objetivos de clase. Su odio, en este caso, debe ser tomado como un monumental FELICIDADES MAESTROS Y MAESTRAS EN SU DÍA, porque tanto repudio, no hace sino confirmar que les estamos ganando.

El próximo año será un año difícil para el gremio del magisterio, toca la renegociación del estatuto del docente y ya se menciona que la clase política considera al mismo como una molesta carga de la que les urge deshacerse. Seguramente si el golpe tiene éxito, el próximo presidente buscará cortar muchos de los derechos adquiridos en las calles. La resistencia del magisterio contra el golpe de estado es pues, vital para futuro del gremio.

Anoche volvieron los candidatos presidenciales luego de su reunión con Oscar Arias en San José de Costa Rica, como sabíamos, no traen nada sino palabras vacías que llenan espacio en los diarios nacionales y a su vez no dicen nada. “Estamos de acuerdo -dice el comunicado publicado por La Tribuna- que, de suscribirse de manera concertada, el acuerdo de San José permitirá facilitar la reconciliación del pueblo de Honduras, bajo un monitoreo efectivo de la comunidad internacional, para que los hechos que provocaron la crisis no vuelva a repetirse, asegurando así el total respeto a la constitución y las leyes”. No mencionan el retorno de Manuel Zelaya al poder como condición para esa “reconciliación” y por el contrario parece ser que lejos de condenar el golpe de estado del 28 de Junio, hablan de un monitoreo “preventivo” de futuros intentos de cambiar la constitución culpando en todo a la administración Zelaya del golpe de estado y lavando así de responsabilidad a Micheletti y su mafia.

Y es que ven en las elecciones de noviembre su última esperanza da salir victoriosos de la crisis y pretenden aguantar, a toda costa, para que sea el próximo presidente quien logre la “reconciliación del pueblo de Honduras”. “Entre nosotros está el próximo presidente”, dice más adelante el mismo comunicado al tiempo que Roberto Micheletti acusa a Oscar Arias de ser un títere al servicio de las naciones que quieren la restitución del Presidente Zelaya (en este caso todas las naciones de la tierra).

El Tribunal Supremo Electoral ha anunciado la suscripción de un convenio con la iglesia Evangélica, representada en este caso por el pastor Evelio Reyes, en donde presentan la “estrategia” que piensas usar para lograr que las elecciones de Noviembre sean las más votadas de la historia. “El voto en cadena”, según lo han llamado, consiste en convencer a una persona para que vote, esta a su vez haría el trabajo de convencer a diez más y cada uno de estos a diez respectivamente extendiendo la cadena, según dijera el pastor Reyes, “indefinidamente” llenando las urnas de convencidos demócratas. Con esta creativa estrategia piramidal, acompañada con la oferta de Fito Facusse del descuento en los combos hamburguesas y papas fritas, piensan dar una lección al mundo, demostrar que el pueblo hondureño ha madurado políticamente desde el 28 de junio y está listo para seguir su propio proyecto de nación de mano de la oligarquía.

Es impresionante conocer del descaro con que habla Roberto Micheletti, da la impresión que ha llegado a creerse sus propias mentiras cuando dice que “nuestra gente no ha roto el diálogo de San José”, “no permitimos imposiciones de nadie para demostrar que queremos vivir en paz y democracia” y “solo una invasión extranjera podrá sacarme del poder”, da la impresión digo, que se la cree, que ha logrado cegarse al mundo apropiándose de una “verdad” que con el correr de los días manifiesta ser más enfermiza. “No hay forma de echar para atras”, afirma el poderoso hombrecito, “a menos que el pueblo hondureño me diga, en un momento determinado, Roberto, tenemos que ceder”. Eso, señor Micheletti, tenemos 82 días de decírselo.

Elvin Santos continúa con su estrategia de víctima que tan bien le funcionó en las elecciones internas del año pasado. Esta vez gritando a los cuatro vientos que teme por su vida, pues según él Manuel Zelaya lo ha amenazado de muerte y envía a personas no liberales para boicotear su campaña agrediéndolo a él y otros candidatos a cargos de elección que por pura casualidad han respaldado firmemente al golpe de estado. Pero lo peor, según dice Santos, es que estos “malos hondureños que llaman a no participar en las elecciones” gozan de la protección internacional, la impunidad que amenaza la paz y la democracia nacional llevándonos al borde de la guerra. “Hay que ponerle un alto a todo esto”, dice Elvín Santos, “hay que identificar quienes son los que están haciendo todo este daño y decirles que ya basta”.

Para finalizar, un ejemplo del doble lenguaje Orweliano usado por los medios de comunicación nacional. Mientras el resto de los países de la región evalúan con seriedad los posibles estragos que la crisis económica, acompañada por la sequía producto del fenómeno del niño, los cuales podría traer graves hambrunas y estados de calamidad entre los más pobres, Honduras anunció hoy en los diarios nacionales, que cuenta con las mejores reservas de granos básicos de la región y está preparada para vender alimento a los hermanos países centroamericanos. Las autoridades han garantizado una reserva sólida, dice la nota de prensa, por lo que Honduras no será golpeada por la hambruna.

Asumiendo que dicha nota es cierta, hay que reconocer aquí que la reserva de granos básicos se debe a las cosechas de los años anteriores, que según afirman los expertos ha sido buena. Nada garantiza que se mantenga en los mismo niveles para el próximo año, porque la falta de apoyo financiero a la agricultura después del mes de junio, acompañada por los problemas que enfrenta el sector agrícola, podría traer una situación peor de la que se imaginan. Pero claro, eso pasaría bajo el próximo gobierno.
