HONDURAS COUP LINKS
A week has passed since I wrote my last note and although the reality of Honduras remains in constant flux, in fact it seems that little has changed. I am outside the country, and it scares me to see how, if one doesn't specifically seek out information on Honduras, it seems like nothing is happening. Nothing: not the constant mobilization of the people, not the violation of their fundamental rights, not the deaths, not the disappearances that arise from the most horrifying crevices of the regime. Deep down we knew and prepared for what would be a prolonged and difficult fight, in the shadow of the front pages of the daily newspapers and of the television news shows that maliciously ignore our epic struggle. With luck, some years from now our story will be read to the hypocritical surprise of the world and those who now govern in their palaces will be condemned for not having taken "more concrete" actions to prevent the horror that rains upon us
At two months since the coup d'etat, we must recognize that the government has strongly consolidated. The international isolation and the constant popular mobilization that maintain the country practically paralyzed have had little effect. The condemnation of major sectors of the population toward the principal protagonists of this dark parody, forcing them to move away from the light like nervous rats or surrounded by mercenaries ready to defend the integrity of their boss with their lives, has has little effect. The visits of the Interamerican Commission of Human Rights and the foreign ministers of the OAS with their useless condemnations have had little effect. In fact the puppet government of Micheletti remains unscathed, and before our terrorized gaze projects its image on the November elections.
From the first days of the resistance to the end of June (when I think about it it seems like so long ago), we all placed our hopes in the international community: the OAS, EU, ALBA, Washington, Grupo de Río, SICA, CAFTA, any group that would recognize the injustice of a reality forced on us by the avarice of an oligarchy disposed to bring the ghost of dictatorships past back to life. But the world's efforts have done little for Honduras, because our country only really matters to those of us who have had the luck to be born and live in these lands.
History doesn't lie to us; a little more that ten years ago Aristide left Haiti under more or less similar conditions to those of Mr. Zelaya and he still mourns his exile in South Africa. Those who planned the coup d'etat in Honduras knew that nothing would be done in practice to impose the various resolutions. In terms of international negotiation, it is impotant to have a carrot and/or a stick as an alternative to the points of the treaty. Neither of the two are sufficiently strong in our case. Micheletti was right when he said, days after his pathetic coronation, that an economic blockade would affect Washington more than Tegucigalpa. Obama knows it and that's why he prefers to dance around the issue, accusing those who demand more concrete actions from the White House of being hypocrites.
Now, facing the total failure of the international community, incapable of putting into practice its rhetoric of condemnation, the question remains, what next?
Zelaya, little by little is losing the role of protagonist in this conflict. Not because he wants it that way; certainly he will try to figure as the center of the popular struggle, certainly the dictatorship will continue trying to tie him to all the sectors that are opposed to the project of oligarchic domination. But in reality, the people are now demanding to go beyond the return of constitutional order. We have now begun the fight for National Liberation. We are off to a late start compared with the rest of the countries in the region, and therefore have the advantage of knowing their successes and failures of our neighbors' experiences. Could Zelaya reincorporate himself into the popular fight in a new role? Personally I don't think so--to date he has shown few signs of the intelligence, astuteness, capacity and humility necessary to lead a people's fight that has demonstrated to the world a courage and determination that noone among the political class could have even imagined.
The Resistance has been forced to change, to profoundly transform itself given the new circumstances in which we find ourselves. We must stop reacting against the attack of the dictatorship and begin to take the initiative in the conflict. We must stop working within the bourgeois logic of the electoral system--corrupt and far from the reality of the people--in order to construct a revolutionary, subversive logic capable of integrating the whole spectrum of popular demands and keeping them integrated in a solid bloc.
The November elections appear in this scenario as the system's trap to divide and conquer the resistance. The oligarchy that was capable of planning and carrying out a coup d'etat against sectors of its own class will never permit that the independent candidates, nor the Congressmembers of the Democratic Unity party take away their control of the National Congress, which has demonstrated its ability to mantain and strengthen the status quo. Under these circumstances electoral fraud is not just an option at hand; it is a guarantee. Pepe Lobo means the continuation of the oligarchic project of domination and although there are sectors of the Liberal Party that call for the elections to be pushed back to November of next year, in fact that will be very unlikely. The government of Micheletti is already far to onerous to think about leaving it in place another year.
Meanwhile, the repressive structures of national security will continue making use of the instruments at their disposal to neutralize popular organizations. Political assassinations disguised through acts of organized crime; forced disappearances of compañeros and compañeras starting with visible leaders will give way to massive acts of terrorism. Is it our work now to protect ourselves from repression, and stop acting while believing that the enemy respects the rules of the game. We are facing the start of a new phase of resistance.

¡No pasarán!

Thanks, Oscar...
Good article, it shows your love for your countrymen and nation.
I do feel, though, that your view has been polluted a bit by a perhaps too negative perception.
Goriletti's dictatorship is falling in pieces right before our eyes, my friend, and our Resistance movement is always shifting and finding new ways in which to push the regime.
Things do move too slowly on an international level, but they move, this won't be another Haiti, as a soldier of the Resistance I promise you that.
And, believe it or not, international pressure is also cracking the regime.
All around you will find their desperate actions, ridiculous mistakes, and bottomless disappointment, nothing they do comes out right, and some of the rats are already leaving that boat.
The heroic Resistance has them all against the wall, even though you won't find that in their news.
Many other wonderful things are happening around us, leaders are being born, and ideals of freedom and independence are finally coming alive in action.
So cheer up!
Today is a good day to fight!
Victory is ours, the universe is with us, and nothing can keep us away from that embrace!
The time has come when all darkness shall be undone, and no one can escape it.
Our ancestors told us of this time, and they called it 'the great rumble', when all those who prey upon men will come out of their holes screaming terror, and run like crazy, until they can run no more.
That time has begun, Oscar.
Golpistas are running around in desperation.
And we, we have barely begun to awaken...
