In the Crime section of the yellow newspapers appears an announcement of the death, in the city of Choloma, of Juan Gabriel Figueroa Tomé, age 30, worker and active member of the resistance since June 28th. His death swells the list of violent acts in one of the most dangerous regions of the country and is maliciously conflated with the rest of the violence, hiding the political nature of the act. Juan Figueroa was kidnapped by armed men the previous night, and he died from a gunshot in the nape of his neck. [translator's note: see Sandra Cuffe's excellent piece (in Spanish) for more detail]. "We don't want your motorcycle, we came for you," said his assassins upon kidnapping him, according to witnesses who did not give their names for fear of meeting a similar end. Even if his assassination weren't political, the result is. Once again the death squads make use of the legion of hired killers to create terror among an organized population that resists, refusing to leave its future in the hands of a band of criminals. Juan Gabriel Figueroa Tomé will live in the hearts of the people as yet another martyr of the popular resistance.

The resistance marches continue nearing the principal cities of the country and plan to meet up on Tuesday. Among the rumors circulating is one that claims that the Armed Forces will seek to prevent their entrance by setting up checkpoints and closing the main highways. If they do this, it will be further evidence of the stupidity of a regime that has excelled in absurd and desperate actions.

The day-long cultural event of Artists against the Coup d'etat took place in Tegucigalpa, initiating the "Teach the Minister of Culture to Read" literacy campaign. Elementary school texts, handwriting notebooks and other materials were collected to be delivered to the offices of the Secretary of Culture, Art and Sports to improve the education of Ms. Mirna Castro.

Coinciding with the Day of Culture, the association of reservists marched some five blocks from the parking lot of Larach and Co. to the presidential residence. They were given new shirts emblazoned with the instructions "reservist defending democracy" in return for their faithful promise to join the armed wing of the regime in defense of sovereignty and of the "constitutional" government of Micheletti. The photos of the paramilitary members that adorn the front pages of the main newspapers of the country brag about the new army that the regime will use, just like Mussolini with his black shirts, or Hitler with his brown shirts. They state numerous times that they are ready to take up arms if they see a threat to the order, peace and democracy that, according to them, is today an example for the whole world.

The police announced to the media that it would bring legal action against protesters who use "disproportionate violence" against the institution, which is only trying to do its job. Monsignor Darwin Andino, auxiliary bishop of Tegucigalpa, said in an interview with Radio Globo, that the defenders of human rights and alternative media are not objective in their analysis and are showing a violence that doesn't really exist in Honduras. The same day that they killed the youth at the airport, said Monsignor, that same day in China they were killing six hundred protesters and he didn't see why they were making such a big deal about Honduras. For Monsignor, and for the police, the blame for the deaths and the violence against the protesters lies with the protesters themselves, "who are asking for it," as each has said in their particular professional lexicon.

The de facto government in Honduras officially refused to meet with the committee from the OAS, because, as they claim, its secretary general is persona non grata by virtue of his socialist ideology that, as Marta Lorena de Casco has repeated, is not to the liking of good Hondurans.

They continue trying over and over again through the media, to explain that in Honduras there has not been a coup d'etat and every time they sound less convincing. Elvin Santos now tries to position himself closer to Mel Zelaya and makes lukewarm denunciations of the coup while his party demands a more forceful condemnation. Adolfo Facussé accuses the armed forces of having committed a huge error in removing the president from the country and recommends that legal action be taken against those responsible.

At the start of the week Roberto Micheletti decided to make a public act out of replacing the flag that waves over the parking lot of the presidential palace. In the vacant parking lot were the television cameras, the president's private bodyguards, and Mr. Micheletti giving a speech to no applause.

En las páginas de sucesos de los diarios amarillos muestras la muerte en la ciudad de Choloma, de Juan Gabriel Figueroa Tomé, de 30 años de edad, obrero y miembro activo de la resistencia desde el 28 de Junio pasado. Su muerte engrosa la lista de acciones violentas en una de las zonas más peligrosas del país y se confunde maliciosamente ocultando la esencia política del hecho. Juan Figueroa fue secuestrado por hombres armados la noche anterior, murió de un disparo en la nuca. No queremos tu moto, es por vos que venimos, le dijeron sus asesinos al momento de secuestrarlo según cuentan testigos que jamás declararán por miedo a tener un fin similar al del joven obrero. Si su asesinato no es político, el resultado lo es. Una vez más los escuadrones de la muerte hacen uso del sicariato para crear terror entre la población organizada que se resiste a dejar su futuro en manos de una pandilla de criminales. Juan Gabriel Figueroa Tomé vivirá en el corazón del pueblo como un mártir más de la resistencia popular.

Las marchas de la resistencia continúan acercándose a las principales ciudades del país y piensan juntarse el próximo martes. Entre los rumores que circulan es que las Fuerzas Armadas buscarán boicotear el ingreso de las mismas levantando retenes y cerrando las carreteras principales. Si hacen eso, será una muestra más de la estupidez de un régimen que se ha lucido en disparatadas y desesperadas acciones.

En Tegucigalpa se realizó la jornada cultural de artistas contra el golpe de estado levantando la campaña para “Alfabetizar a la ministra de cultura”. Juntaron libros de primaria, cuadernos de caligrafía y demás material que harán llegar a las oficinas de la Secretaría de Cultura Arte y Deportes para mejorar la educación de la señora Mirna Castro.

Paralelamente a la jornada cultural, la asociación de reservistas marchó unas cinco cuadras desde el estacionamiento de Larach y Cia hasta la casa presidencial. Les dieron camisas nuevas con la consigna de “reservista defendiendo la democracia” a cambio de su compromiso fiel de sumarse al brazo armado del régimen en defensa de la soberanía y el “constitucional” gobierno de Micheletti. Las fotos de los paramilitares que adornan la primera plana de los diarios principales del país anuncia el nuevo ejército que hará uso el régimen, igual que lo hizo Mussolini con los camisas negras, o Hitler con los camisas grises. En muchas ocasiones dijeron estar dispuestos a irse a las armas si se intentaba cambiar el orden, la paz y la democracia que, según lo ven ellos, ahora es ejemplo para el mundo.

La policía anunció a los medios que iniciará acciones legales en la fiscalía contra los manifestantes que hacen uso “de una violencia desmedida” en contra de la institución que sólo busca cumplir con su trabajo. Monseñor Darwin Andino, obispo auxiliar de Tegucigalpa dijo en una entrevista a radio Globo, que los defensores de derechos humanos y los medios de comunicación alternativos no son objetivos en sus análisis y muestran una violencia que no existe en Honduras. El mismo día que mataron al joven del aeropuerto, dijo monseñor, ese mismo día en China se estaba matando a seiscientos manifestantes y no ve porqué levantar tanto escándalo en Honduras. Para monseñor, y para la policía, la culpa de las muertes y de la violencia en contra de los manifestantes la tienen los mismos manifestantes, “que se lo están buscando”, según han dicho cada quien con su propio léxico profesional.

El gobierno de facto de Honduras rechazó oficialmente reunirse con la comitiva de la OEA, según ellos porque su secretario general es non grato al estar parcializado producto de su ideología socialista que, como ha repetido Marta Lorena de Casco, no es de agrado de los hondureños buenos.

Siguen intentando, una y otra vez por los medios de comunicación, de explicar que en Honduras no ha habido Golpe de Estado y cada vez suenan menos convincentes. Elvin Santos busca ahora acercarse a Mel Zelaya y hace tibias condenas al golpe de estado mientras su partido le exige un rechazo más contundente. Adolfo Facussé acusa a las Fuerzas Armadas de haber cometido un gran error al sacar al Presidente del país y recomienda que se proceda legalmente con los responsables.

A principio de la semana Roberto Micheletti decidió hacer un acto público cambiando la bandera que ondea en el parqueo del palacio presidencial. En el parqueo vacío estaban las cámaras de televisión, la escolta privada del presidente y el señor Micheletti que daba un discurso carente de aplausos.
