Since the events of last Thursday we have been able to see a change in the strategy of the repression. And although we may have known it was coming, it still took us by surprise. The violence and brutality carried out against the marchers in Tegucigalpa was repeated the next day in Comayagua, Copan, and yesterday in San Pedro Sula with similar numbers of victims. This demonstrates an increase in the massive repression to which the Honduran people are being subjected, but especially--and I'll explain this in more detail--it also shows a change in the targets of the attacks; their bull's eye is now the independent media.

It is not a coincidence that in the three occasions in which they shot at the marchers, two of them resulting in deaths, en each instance there was a camera within meters of the victims. IN EACH INSTANCE, and our images demonstrate this, even if we cannot be sure that we ourselves were the ones being shot at, it was done with the intention of intimidating us and leaving a clear message: It could be you.

As I was being beaten by the police, together, nearly simultaneously, with four other videographers, one of the officials repeated what seemed to be the justification for these attacks: It's your fault, because you're not objective with your information, that this country is on its knees. We are fed up with this, he said--be objective. But the fact is, with the exception of our cameras and our radio reports, there would be no record in the country of what is happening and what they want is for the last few weeks that we have lived through in Honduras to be erased from the people's memory.

Today Radio Globo reported that it had on hand a letter that smells like an order from the armed forces to CONATEL, instructing that the radio be closed for "instigating sedition and subversion of order." With this, they claim the right to silence the only national-level radio station that has steadfastly condemned the arbitrary and continuous human rights violations carried out by the de fact government.

In the morning Renato Álvarez had on his program Frente a Frente [Face to Face] what he called "very special guests," the military top brass all together in a television set. It's not even necessary to go into detail about the massive security operation that enveloped the facilities of Televicentro, closing adjacent avenues to transit; instead I will talk about what was said on the program.

In it the military authorities gave the explanation for the "historical" democratic role of the Armed Forces, who once again, in the words of General Padget, have rescued Honduras from Socialism. During the program, two more things were said that called my attention: Romeo Vásquez condemned the "malicious" use of information by members of the resistance who seek, according to him, to repeat a thousand times the lie that they are assassins, until this ends up being the truth. That it, according to him, the dead don't count; they are lies fabricated by the "malicious" media who misinform the international community, since after all the national community is being well-informed by the patriotic news stations.

The other thing was a direct call he made--the general himself--to the resistance, "which has not let go of the repressive techniques of the decade of the 80s." Yes, he used those words and he was not referring to 3-16 or Billy Joya, but to the occupation of highways, strikes, sit-ins and marches that are, according to the general, obsolete methods of struggle and a "clear attack on the human rights of the people." I am impressed by the way they turn around the discourses and twist them into something ridiculous, like when Ramón Custodio shouted in the halls of the presidential residence, in chorus with the business elite and ministers: "If this isn't the people, then I don't know who is!"

A young reporter was attacked by nearly ten police on the north coast, his arm broken in two, his camera destroyed and now he is being charged with attacking the police.

Over the weekend there were burials of the two teachers who died during the weekend: Roger Vallejo and Martín Rivera. The first death took place on Saturday after two agonizing days following his being shot in the head by the police, and the second died from 26 stab wounds upon leaving Vallejo's wake in the facilities of COPEMH [Association of Secondary Teachers of Honduras]. With them the tally rises to 9 victims of the dictatorship.

The teachers have extended the strike for the rest of the week in condemnation of the assassinations of their compañeros and are planning two long marches, together with peasants and workers, to the principle cities of the country, one to Tegucigalpa and one to San Pedro Sula. They plan to walk approximately 120 kilometers and join marches on August 11th in what they plan to be two very large marches. The healthcare workers with the union SITRAMEDYS announced an indefinite strike in all medical institutions, paralyzing hospitals and health centers at the national level. The resistance, the people, is still on its feet.

Desde los hechos del jueves pasado pudimos reconocer un cambio en la estrategia de la represión, que si bien era algo que nos esperábamos, no dejó de sorprendernos. La misma persecución y brutal golpiza que se dio a los manifestantes en Tegucigalpa, se dio en Comayagua al día siguiente, Copán y ayer en San Pedro Sula con saldos más o menos similares. Muestra esto un aumento en la represión masiva que vive el pueblo hondureño, pero en especial, y explicaré esto con más detalle, muestra también un cambio en el foco de los ataques, su blanco ahora son los medios independientes.

No es casualidad que en las 3 ocasiones en donde se atacó con disparos a los manifestantes, dos de ellas con saldos fatales, en todas había una cámara a pocos metros de las víctimas. EN TODAS, y nuestras imágenes muestran, que si bien no podemos asegurar que se disparó contra nosotros, si se hizo con el ánimo de intimidarnos y dejar claro el mensaje: podrías ser vos.

En la golpiza que la policía me dio, junto a cuatro camarógrafos más de forma casi simultánea, uno de los oficiales repetía lo que parece ser la justificación de estos ataques: es por culpa de ustedes, que no son objetivos en la información, que este país está de rodillas. Estamos hartos ya de esto, dijo, sean objetivos. Y es que con la excepción de nuestras cámaras y nuestros reportes radiales, no hay registro en el país de los que está pasando y ellos están interesados en hacer que la memoria del pueblo no recuerde las últimas semanas que hemos vivido en Honduras.

Hoy Radio Globo reportó que tienen en su mano una solicitud, que huele a orden desde las Fuerzas Armadas hacia CONATEL, en donde se pide el cierre definitivo de la radio por “instigar a la sedición y subversión del orden”. Con esto se pretende silenciar la única radio que a nivel nacional se ha mantenido denunciando las arbitrariedades y constantes violaciones a los Derechos Humanos por parte del gobierno de facto.

Por la mañana Renato Álvarez tuvo en su programa Frente a Frente, a lo que calificó como “invitados de lujo”, la cúpula castrense completa en un set de televisión. No es necesario siquiera entrar en detalle del gran circuito de seguridad que se levantó en las instalaciones de Televicentro que cerraron al tráfico las avenidas aledañas, sino que hablaré de lo que se dijo en el programa.

En él los altos jerarcas daban la explicación del rol democrático “histórico” de las Fuerzas Armadas, quienes nuevamente, en palabras del General Padget, salvaron a Honduras del Socialismo. Dos cosas más se dijo en el programa que me llamó la atención: Romeo Vázquez denunció el uso “malicioso” de la información por parte de la resistencia quienes buscan, según sus palabras, repetir mil veces la mentira de que son asesinos, hasta que esto termine siendo verdad. O sea, según él los muertos no valen, son mentiras fabricadas por los medios “maliciosos” que desinforman a la comunidad internacional, porque dejó claro que la comunidad nacional está bien informada por los canales patrióticos.

Lo otro fue el llamando que hizo, el mismo general, a la resistencia, “que no han salido de las técnicas represivas de la década de los ochenta”. Si, usó esas palabras y no se estaba refiriendo al 3-16 y Billy Joya, sino a las toma de carreteras, huelgas, plantones y marchas que son, para el general, manifestaciones anticuadas de la lucha y una “clara agresión a los derechos humanos del pueblo”. Me impresiona ver como dan vuelta a los discursos y los tuercen al ridículo, como cuando Ramón Custodio gritara en los salones de la casa presidencial, coreado por los empresarios y ministros: Si este no es el pueblo, el pueblo dónde está.

Un joven comunicador fue agredido por cerca de diez policías en la costa norte, su brazo fracturado en dos partes, su cámara destruida y ahora pesa sobre él un requerimiento fiscal por agredir a la policía.
El fin de semana se dio entierro a los dos profesores muertos el fin de semana: Roger Vallejo y Martín Rivera. El primero muerto el sábado luego de dos días de agonía producto del disparo que recibió en la cabeza el día jueves por parte de la policía y el segundo muerto de 26 puñaladas, al salir del velorio del profesor Vallejo en las instalaciones del COPENH. Con ellos suman ya 9 las víctimas de la dictadura.

Los maestros ampliaron la Huelga para toda la semana en repudio por los asesinatos de sus compañeros y planean iniciar dos grandes caminatas, junto con los campesinos y trabajadores a las principales ciudades del país, una a Tegucigalpa y otra a San Pedro Sula. Piensan caminar cerca de ciento veinte kilómetros y juntarse para el próximo once de Agosto en lo que planean será dos grandes marchas. Los trabajadores de la salud agrupados por el SITRAMEDYS anunciaron una huelga indefinida en todas las instituciones médicas paralizando los hospitales y centros de salud a nivel nacional. La resistencia, el pueblo, sigue en pie.
