HONDURAS COUP LINKS
Jari Dixon is lawyer with the Honduran Attorney Generals office, and is Vice President of the Association of Honduran Government Attorneys (Asocacion Hondureño de Fiscales). In 2008 he coordinated a hunger strike by lawyers who work for the Attorney Generals office in protest of corruption in the legal system. He is currently in D.C with a delegation of Honduran human rights advocates to present an analysis of the many illegal measures taken to create the guise of legality during the coup in Honduras.
After Jari's interview was aired yesterday by CNN en Espanol, a police squad in Honduras stormed his mother's house and machine-gunned the entrance. Once they were inside they beat his mom and sisters and arrested his brother after stating "Te llego tu hora". ["Your time has come"].
Jari already talked to CNN en Espanol and AFP to get the story out, but we need as much coverage as we can tomorrow to protect him and his family. A press conference will take place today at 12:30, National Press Club Ballroom East Room, 529 14th St., NW, 13th Floor.
Bios of the other members of the Honduran Delegation:
Marvin Ponce is a member of the Honduran National Congress who can describe in detail the illegalities incurred by the National Congress prior to and following the coup to create the illusion of a normal succession of power. He was elected in 2006 to a term ending in 2010 with the Democratic Union party. He is a sociologist who has advised organizations of small farmers.
Dr. Juan Almendares is a widely recognized environmentalist who was candidate for president for the Democratic Union party in the 2005 elections. He is Director of the Madre Tierra environmental association which is a member of Friends of the Earth. He will speak to violation of fundamental human rights and the constitution of Honduras, the control of information and violation of the freedom of the press, and xenophobia being generated against Nicaraguans and Venezuelans in Honduras.
