At noon the correspondents from Telesur left after having been arrested in the pre-dawn hours on Sunday. Héctor Iván Mejía, spokesman for the police, gave two justifications for their actions: They had violated the curfew and were detained to be investigated by the police and when they discovered that the vehicle they were driving had been reported as stolen, they were arrested and then deported. The vehicle that the correspondents were using was a rental car. Telesur has stayed in Honduras with a skeleton crew to cover whatever might happen in the next few days. With them are a few correspondents from international agencies and the independent media reporters who are still here alongside us.

Yesterday in San Pedro Sula and Santa Barbara, two more popular resistance leaders fighting the coup d'etat, Roger Bados y Ramón García (both activists in the Democratic Unification Party) were assassinated. One was murdered by hired killers upon leaving his home; the other was forced off a bus and then executed. The police commissioner Mejía again tried to present the acts as isolated cases, perhaps related, he claimed, with "a settling of accounts within organized crime."

We can see with this what the strategy they will use in the coming month will be, to weaken the resistance and destroy social and grassroots organizations. It's the same one they used 30 years ago, in some cases with the same actors. They will stick their hands in the judicial system and the prosecutors' offices to arrest leaders, accusing them of common crimes. In some cases these accusations will be fabricated, in others they will blow minor infractions out of proportion. When this doesn't work, selective assassination of leaders and organizers of the grassroots movement. We haven't yet seen the tool of forced disappearances, but there is little doubt they will use it if the control that up until now has been maintained slips from their hands.

Yesterday there was a concert in the central park, organized by the Artistic Association of Honduras, various bands, soloists and poets offering their talent to the resistance of which they are a part. There is, among Honduran artists, unanimous condemnation of the new Secretary of Culture whose only merit is having been a television show host on a second-rate channel.

In addition to the concert, which was very nice, there were two interesting things worth mentioning. One was the attempted arrest of one of the singers by the police. The protestors don't know why they took him, nor did it matter much to us. When we realized he was being arrested, dozens of people, mostly women, rushed furiously at the police car to free the young man, freeing him from their hands. The fear in the faces of the police as they tried to explain that they weren't arresting him for political reasons did not matter. The women spat on them, they scratched them and insulted them until they took off his handcuffs and let him go. Little victories of the people.

At the end of the day, one of the young artists who has been with the resistance since June 28th got drunk and tried to pick a fight with the police. For a moment there was confusion--the event was over and fifty or so of us had remained behind, we knew he shouldn't have been drinking, that that could ruin all the work we've been doing, but neither could we let the police take him away. The young man got up on a newspaper stand (El Heraldo) threatening the compañeros who tried to control him. From above, and with a shout that echoed throughout the whole square he said "Do you know who I am? Do you know who? I am King Kong!" This caused raucous laughter among everyone, and relaxed us. They were able to calm him down and once again the police was unable to intervene.

Today the highway blockades continue throughout the country, mostly organized by peasant group. In Tegucigalpa there will be a meeting in which the strategy that the resistance will follow from now on will be discussed. In the national media, nothing happens at all.

A medio día salieron los corresponsales de Telesur luego de haber sido arrestados la madrugada del domingo. Héctor Iván Mejía, vocero de la policía dio dos justificaciones para los hechos: Ellos habían violado el toque de queda y fueron detenidos para ser investigados por la policía y al ver estos que el vehículo qué andaban había sido reportado como robado fueron arrestados y posteriormente deportados. El vehículo del que estaban haciendo uso los corresponsales era alquilado. Telesur quedó en Honduras con un equipo mínimo para cubrir lo que pueda ocurrir en los próximos días. Con ellos algunos corresponsales de agencias internacionales y los medios independientes que siguen acá, junto a nosotros.

Ayer también fueron asesinados en San Pedro Sula y Santa Bárbara, Roger Bados y Ramón García, dos líderes populares contra el golpe de estado y militantes del Partido Unificación Democrática. Uno fue asesinado por sicarios al salir de su casa de habitación, el otro fue bajado del bus y luego ejecutado. El comisario Mejía nuevamente trata de presentar los hechos como actos aislados, relacionados quizá, cómo él dice, con “un ajuste de cuentas del crimen organizado”.

Podemos ver con esto cual será la estrategia que han de usar para los próximos meses para debilitar la resistencia y destruir las organizaciones sociales y populares. Es la misma que usaron hace 30 años en algunos casos con los mismos actores. Van a echar mano al sistema judicial y la fiscalía para arrestar a líderes acusándolos de crímenes comunes, en algunos casos quizá fabricados, en otros serán faltas menores dimensionadas. Cuando esto no funcione, el asesinato selectivo de líderes y organizadores del movimiento popular. Aun no aparece la herramienta de las desapariciones forzadas, pero no dudo que han de usarlas si el control que hasta el momento han mantenido se les sale de las manos.

Ayer se dio un concierto en el parque central organizado por la Asociación Artística de Honduras, varias bandas, solistas y poetas ofreciendo su talento a la resistencia de la que ellos también forman parte. Existe, entre los artistas nacionales, un repudio total para la nueva Secretaria de Cultura cuyo único mérito es haber sido presentadora de un programa de televisión en un canal de segunda.

A parte del concierto, que estuvo muy lindo, se dieron dos hechos interesantes que merece mencionar. Uno fue el intento de arresto de uno de los cantantes por parte de la policía. No sabemos por qué lo llevaban y a los manifestantes tampoco les importó mucho. En cuanto se dijo que estaba siendo arrestado varias decenas de personas, en su mayoría mujeres, se abalanzaron con rabia contra el auto patrulla para reclamar la liberación del joven quitándoselos de las manos. La cara de miedo de los policías que trataban de explicar que no lo arrestaban por razones políticas no importó. Las mujeres les escupían, les aruñaban y les insultaban hasta que le quitaron las esposas y lo dejaron libre. Pequeñas victorias del pueblo.

Al final de la jornada, uno de los jóvenes artistas que ha andado todas con la resistencia desde el 28 de Junio, se emborrachó y trató de buscar pelea con los policías. Por un momento hubo confusión, ya había terminado el evento y quedábamos unas cincuenta personas conversando, sabíamos que no debía haber bebido, que eso arruinaría todo el trabajo que hemos venido haciendo, pero tampoco podíamos dejar que la policía se lo lleve. El joven se subió en un estánd del diario El Heraldo amenazando a los compañeros que intentaban controlarlo. Desde arriba, y con un grito que retumbó por toda la peatonal dijo, “¿saben quién soy yo?, ¿Saben quién?, ¡Yo soy King Kong!”. Eso produjo las carcajadas de todos y nos relajó. Lograron controlarlo y nuevamente la policía no pudo intervenir.
Hoy las tomas de carreteras continúan por todo el país, dirigidas especialmente por grupos campesinos. En Tegucigalpa se hará una asamblea en donde se piensa compartir la estrategia a seguir a partir de ahora para la resistencia. En los medios de comunicación nacionales, no pasa nada.
